Regarding the version, any OSX 10.4 will work on any Powerbook G4 except for the Powerbook G4 (Dual Layer SD) which requires 10.4.2. Accoding to your post stating model A1010 or A1104, you will have no problem wiht any 10.4 disc, as long as it's not a disc form another mac (the gray discs). Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003) Install & Restore Discs. 1st download is PowerMacSoftware.toast.zip which contains Mac OS X 10.3.2 and Mac OS 9.2.2. Apple Hardware Test 2.0.2 for Power Mac is included. To boot to Apple Hardware Test on a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003), hold down 'Option' at startup to access the boot manager. Make sure your PowerBook's power cord is connected and plugged into a working power source. Save all open documents and quit all applications. If a disc is in the DVD-ROM drive, eject it.

Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003) Install & Restore Discs
1st download is Power_Mac_Software.toast.zip which contains Mac OS X 10.3.2 and Mac OS 9.2.2. Apple Hardware Test 2.0.2 for Power Mac is included. To boot to Apple Hardware Test on a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003), hold down 'Option' at startup to access the boot manager.
2nd download is Restore_DVD.toast.zip. The disc primarily contains GarageBand and iDVD restores for OS X. Mount this volume and look in /Volumes/Restore DVD/.images and those are the only two files of substance present on the disc. On the root level of the disc, there is Apple documentation how to perform a full software restore on a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003).
If folks are only looking for the special Mac OS 9.2.2 build that can boot up on a Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003, a 'formal' install of OS X and restore is not necessary.
On the first disc, there is a hidden .images folder at the root level of the disc. The OS9General.dmg (contained in that folder) contains OS 9.2.2 files and apps for that model. You can pull a copy of the DMG out of that folder, open it in OS X and copy the OS 9.2.2 files/apps to whichever volume you like. You could probably also use Disk Copy 6.5b13 to open this DMG in OS 9.2.2 itself (unsure of that).
Third Download is OS9General.dmg is Mac OS 9.2.2 from Power_mac_Software.Toast.zip
I can confirm this OS9General.dmg will not open in Mac OS 9.2.2. I tried Disk copy to open in Mac OS 9.2.2. It said error -50. When I tried the open the file with Virtual DVD-ROM/CD Utility to open the file. It said system resources in Virtual DVD-ROM/CD Utility and failed to open. Then I tried Roxio Toast Titanium 5.2.3 and it failed to open. Use Disk Utility to burn this to DVD or Burn it to Toast to DVD.
For the really geeky in this group, what makes this build of OS 9.2.2 special is that it contains within it CPU Software 5.9 which is the last-known version of Mac OS CPU Software. Mac OS CPU Software along with an updated copy of Drive Setup was what Apple used to allow these machines from 2003 to boot OS 9.2.2 long after OS 9.2.2 was originally released in December of 2001.

would be a start. Its serial number would be better: it is probably
printed inside the battery compartment.
The first five characters are enough to determine the manufacture date,
which should identify the model. The third character is the last digit
of the year of manufacture, the next two are the week number. For
example, the serial number of my PowerBook G4 (DVI) starts with QT221,
which indicates it was manufactured in 2002 week 21.
Your friend's PowerBook G4 is probably too new to be supported by your
'universal' 9.2 boot disc. The last few generations of Macs which could
boot Mac OS 9 require a model-specific 9.2.2 disc which came with the
computer.
Looking through MacTracker, only the original PowerBook G4 (Jan 2001 to
Oct 2001) would be old enough to boot from 9.2. The Gigabit Ethernet
model (Oct 2001) requires 9.2.1. All later Titanimum models (Apr 2002 or
later) require 9.2.2, probably model-specific. Aluminium models can't
boot Mac OS 9 at all, only use it via the Classic environment from Mac
OS X 10.0 through 10.4.
There is a small possibility that Apple can still sell replacement
install media for the computer, given its serial number. I don't know
whether they still do that for models outside the five to seven year
hardware support window.
Failing that, you may need to find someone who has the same model and
give you a copy of their disc, or use Mac OS X.
